DriveMate privacy policy
Last updated: [DATE]. DriveMate is made by [LEGAL ENTITY NAME, ABN] ("we", "us"). This policy explains what DriveMate collects, why, where it is kept and the choices you have. It is written to meet the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
The short version
DriveMate records your drives so you have the vehicle records your tax authority asks for. Your location is used for that and nothing else. We don't sell your data, we don't use it for advertising, and there are no advertising or analytics trackers in the app.
What we collect
Trips. When you allow location access, DriveMate records the drives you make: start and end times, the route as GPS points, distance, stops along the way, and the start and end addresses (looked up from the coordinates). GPS runs only while a drive is being recorded; while you are not driving the app relies on low-power signals from iOS (leaving the spot where you parked, significant location changes and visits).
Motion activity. With Motion & Fitness access, iOS tells the app whether you seem to be driving, walking or still. It is used on your phone to start and end trips at the right moment and is not stored except inside a trip's record of why it ended.
What you enter. Trip categories (for example business or private), purposes and notes; your vehicles (make, model, registration, engine capacity); odometer readings and, if you scan them, a photo of the odometer; saved places such as home, work and client sites; your record periods (for example a 12-week logbook).
Account and subscription. If you create an account (it's optional): your email address or Sign in with Apple identifier, your time zone, language, distance unit and work hours, and your subscription status. Payments are handled by Apple or by our payment processor; we never see your card details.
Diagnostics. If the app crashes or uses too much battery, iOS may give the app a diagnostic report. These stay on your phone unless you choose to share them from Settings.
How we use it
To record and classify your trips; to show your trips, totals and record periods; to work out each trip's odometer readings and your business-use percentage; to produce the reports you export; to keep your trips in sync between the app and the web dashboard; to provide the subscription; and to fix problems you report. We do not use your information for advertising or sell it to anyone.
Where it is kept
On your phone, trips are stored in the app's private storage and protected by iOS data protection. When you sign in, your records are stored with our hosting provider Supabase in Sydney, Australia, and the web dashboard runs on Vercel. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
Who we share it with
Only the service providers that run DriveMate, each limited to what they need: Supabase (database and file storage, Sydney, Australia); Vercel (web hosting); Apple (in-app purchases, Sign in with Apple, address lookup and maps on iOS); RevenueCat (subscription management, United States); Mapbox (matching recorded routes to roads to improve distance accuracy, United States); OpenFreeMap (map images on the web dashboard, which receives the map areas you view); and our payment processor for web purchases (Stripe, United States). Some of these providers may process data outside Australia, in the countries named. We require them to protect it in line with the Australian Privacy Principles. We will disclose information if the law requires it.
Your choices
You can use DriveMate without allowing location access by entering trips by hand. You can pause trip detection, or set off hours (for example 6 PM to 6 AM) when no trips are detected, and choose to stop all location use during them. You can change location and motion permissions at any time in iOS Settings. You can edit or delete any trip, vehicle, place or reading in the app. You can download a copy of all your data at any time, free: on the iPhone in Settings › Privacy and data › Download all my data (everything on the phone), and on the web dashboard in Settings › Your data (everything in your account). You can also export your records as reports, and you can delete your account, which deletes your records from our servers within 30 days (backups expire within a further 30 days).
How long we keep it
Tax authorities generally require you to keep vehicle records for five years. We keep your records for as long as you have an account so they are there when you need them, and delete them when you delete your account. Records stored only on your phone are deleted when you delete the app.
Children
DriveMate is not intended for anyone under 16.
Access, correction and complaints
You can download a copy of the personal information we hold about you yourself (see above), or ask us for it or ask us to correct it by emailing [CONTACT EMAIL]. If you have a privacy complaint, contact us first and we will respond within 30 days. If you are not satisfied, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at www.oaic.gov.au.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app before the change takes effect.
